The Big Sit! is an annual, international, noncompetitive birding event hosted by Bird Watcher’s Digest and founded by the New Haven (Connecticut) Bird Club. Every team that observes the year’s “Golden Bird” has a chance to win $500. Every year, bird watchers from around the globe unite on this special day by participating in this free event, open to any person and club in any country! The Big Sit! is sponsored by Swarovski Optik.

Our 4th Big Sit! on Lake Waxahachie will be on Saturday October 7!

Who: Anybody interested in birds! No experience necessary. We’ll have plenty of optics to try, field guides, expertise and time to show you how to get going birding. The Big Sit is a great time and place for novice and beginning birders to learn from other experienced birders.
What: “The Big Sit” is an annual, international, birding event hosted by Bird Watcher's Digest and founded by the New Haven Bird Club. We man a 17-foot diameter circle and count the birds we hear or see, dawn to dusk, from that circle.
When: We’ll be there all day Saturday, 2017 pre-dawn to dusk, but participants come and go as they please. There is no requirement to be there for any determined length of time.
Where: At Ted’s Place on the shallow west end of Lake Waxahachie, Ellis County, TX
Why: It’s boatloads of fun! The Big Sit is birding’s tailgate party!

Join Fort Worth Audubon Society member Ted Drozdowski at his place for the Fourth Big Sit on the western end of Lake Waxahachie in central Ellis County. Participants are free to come at any time of the day and for any length of duration, but you must make a reservation to attend. (We will be manning the Big Sit Circle from dawn until dusk.) All are welcomed. Bring a friend.

The Big Sit Circle will be centered on Ted’s dock which overlooks the lake/mudflats. There is a commanding view to the north with dead snags, lots of willow trees and mature cottonwoods in a park-like setting with feeders. The shallow end of the lake should provide waterbirds, shorebirds, and waders. This is a great birding location and about anything could show up here. Last year we finished with 59 species on the day, and had a few really nice birds like Anhinga and Yellow-throated Warbler!

Amenities at Ted’s Big Sit! includes two heated bathrooms, a full kitchen, and a hammock for whoever wants to lay back and scan for raptors. Bring a chair, your optics, a hat, and sunscreen if you need it. We will have multiple coolers to keep food and drink cold. We’ll be providing water and coffee in the kitchen. Bring a snack, or lunch if you’re going to be here a while. Although not necessary, feel free to bring a little food to share and pass around.
