The Fort Worth Audubon Society's board members met Saturday, June 27th, at the home of the president Martin Mattingly for a day of sharing ideas and discussing plans for the upcoming season.
Plans
Events - in 2009/10 we will continue the Christmas and Spring bird counts for Tarrant County and for the Village Creek Drying Beds in Arlington. We will participate in the Big Sit at Village Creek in October and an "unofficial" Big Sit in Martin's backyard the same day. We plan to give local birdwatchers a chance to take part in the Greater Backyard Bird Count by leading bird counts in several parks and birding locations in February, and in November we all have a chance to volunteer to help the Fort Worth Nature Center work on improvements during Community Day.
Field Trips - planned outings to Bear Creek Ranch, River Legacy and Village Creek, John Bunker Sands Wetlands, Fort Davis, Lake Benbrook, Lower Rio Grande Valley, Trinity River Audubon, Eagle Mountain Lake, Linkcrest Landfill, River Legacy East, Panhandle of Texas, Snakard Ranch, Uvalde/FortClark/Kickapoo, Prairie Creek Park, Tierra Verde, SE Arizona, Glenrose, and Richland Chamber Creek area.
Monthly Outings - The monthly birdwalks held the first Saturday morning of each month September through April will again be led by Jean Ferguson at Foster Park. In addition, we will be offering a new morning outing to Village Creek Drying Beds, led by Martin Mattingly, Lynn Barber, or Glenda Keilstrup on the second Wednesday of each of those months from 8:30 to 10AM.
Programs at General Meetings
Possible topics may include Birding Today's Galveston, Eco Tours and Hummingbirds in the Valley, Buckner Sands Wetlands, Fort Worth Nature Center, Florida Birding Trail, TOS Sanctuaries, Lesser/Attwater's Prairie Chickens, Birding ID Skills, and Birding and Nature for Children. Members will be receiving postcards to remind them of upcoming fieldtrips and general meetings.
The mini ID classes which begin at 7PM on general meeting nights will continue this season. The response to these classes has been so good that plans are being considered to give the presenter and the participants a better venue at the front of the meeting room.
Conservation and Education
FWAS will donate funds to sponsor an internship at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, will expand its outreach to local elementary schools with the Audubon Adventures programs, and will again offer scholarships to both adults and students who are interested in learning more about or who want to pursue studies in conserving nature's treasures.
FWAS continues to support River Legacy's building of a boardwalk near the entrance to the Drying Beds.
We want to hear from you
The FWAS board welcomes suggestions and concerns from the members. Please feel free to attend one of the board meetings or to submit information to one of the board members by email or by posting an idea on the website forum.
