When birding gets slow at your normal haunts you've got to find new places to get your new bird fix. So why not check up on the status of your state endangered birds by making trips to their homes... kind of like a doctor's house visit.

My first visit was to a family of friendly woodpeckers, red cockaded woodpeckers at that. I read a report that W.G. Jones State Forest was a great place to see them. So, I hopped in a car and drove down there and boy if I didn't know that they were endangered I would think that they are common. They were everywhere! I give credit to the management of that park for the exquisite viewing opportunities and conservation of this species.

Like a super hero off to find food

My other visit will be this weekend to the Black-capped Vireo at South Llano River State Park, hopefully they will still be there as well as other birds that are good friends with the Vireo.

Thanks,

Didi - Where do you live? I'm not sure we have any red-cockaded woodpeckers in the DFW area. Those photos were taken in the Conroe area near Houston. I know we also have some in East Texas.

Didi, I suspect you are seeing Red-bellied wp around DFW. The Red-cockaded wps are East Texas birds with very specific habitat. The Red-bellies (aren't truly fitting of their name) are very common in the DFW area.

The Jones Forest is one of my yearly haunts for Red-cockaded AND Brown-headed nuthatch. And, during migration, the warblers are shooting thru there. It's such easy access to 45 on the way to Houston and the coast that it's a lovely break from driving.
