Love getting off work a little early & being able to get a little birding in. Not so sure my paycheck will love it! Got to the beds about 5 pm, hoping they would be open & indeed they were. No pipe work today, guess they had Good Friday off! The beds were still open when I left a little after 7! The front western road is not drivable at all, every other road is accessible unless the tractors are speeding down the front eastern road.
Bad shot of the end of the front western road - they have come up over the berm via Trammell-Davis Rd

There is now a hole at the beginning of the front western road

They have pipe lying along the entire length of the front eastern road

Saw 37 species, including a flyover of 5 Little Blue Herons - FOS for me. Got a Commom Moorhen in pond 14. Saw 3 Lesser Yellow Legs & 3 Least Sandpipers on the little strip of land between ponds 40 & 41. Counted 128 or so Ruddy Ducks, some whom have blue bills. To say that N. Shovelers are every where is an understatement!! 5 Eared Grebes are hanging out in pond 16 - in varied stages of getting their ears. There are still 10 Buffleheads hanging out - 1 male & nine females. COunted 70 or so Blue-winged Teal. There were 35 in pond 30, the weedy area along the western edge of the pond alone. Yesterday there were Bonaparts Gulls & some Franklins all over the place, pond 32 had nothing on it but gulls. Today I counted about 26 - what a difference a day makes! Sum total of 22 Ring-necked Ducks & a lone female N. Pintail. The Pied-billed Grebes are out in force - 18 today! A couple driving out told they had spotted 2 Wood Ducks in the marsh, but I could never locate them. Gadwalls are still here in decent numbers.
Tried to checkout the Great Horned Owl nest, but the leaves are obscuring the nest. Love spring, the migrants - don't really like the leaves!! Maybe on Tues I can take the scope & see if I can get any decent views.
Not a raptor one seen. Keep hoping for a Swainson's...
