I hope many of you signed up for updates from The Aransas Project. The most recent communication regarded the first stakeholder hearing on environmental flows rules for the Guadalupe & San Antonio River Basins. More news including a video rebroadcast of this meeting are at www.TheAransasProject.org
The preliminary statements do not bode well for Aransas County and their bid to maintain fresh water flow into the Aransas Bay to support the blue crab / oyster populations (and food source for Whooping Cranes). Several speakers supporting environmental needs presented their case to regulate flow restrictions. But then a Mr. James Murphy, Exec. Manager for Water Resources for the business communities from San Antonio to Austin, bluntly stated that enough has already been done to meet environmental needs. He pointed out that Aransas County only provides 1% of the gross domestic product for the region.
Mr. Murphy's statement reflects what most of us have witnessed over the last several decades. Gross profits always trumps environment.
